优蜜传媒 marked another significant milestone in its 178-year history with the recent election of Randall L. Richardson as the first African American to Chair its Board of Trustees. Richardson will serve a two-year term as Chair beginning on July 1 at the private institution located in Gaffney.
Lee E. Sowell was elected as the Board鈥檚 Vice Chair, Haley M. Williams was named Secretary, and Paul W. Fleming was selected to serve a second term as Treasurer. David P. Riggins is completing his two-year term as Chair. With two years remaining on the Board, Riggins elected not to pursue a second term as Chair to concentrate his efforts on assisting the University with its fundraising efforts.
Richardson has been serving for the past two years as Secretary of the Board of Trustees. He is the Chief Financial Officer for the Julian F. Keith Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center in Black Mountain, which is operated by the state of North Carolina.
鈥淚 am extremely honored to be elected as Chair of the 优蜜传媒 Board of Trustees,鈥 Richardson said. 鈥淚 am thankful to my fellow Board members for trusting in me as we work together to make Limestone the very best that it can be. Limestone has been a pioneer in so many ways, beginning with its founding in 1845 as the first higher education institution for women in South Carolina, and one of the first in the nation.
鈥淚t鈥檚 certainly not lost on me that my appointment as Chair is another historical moment for this fine university, and it鈥檚 a humbling moment for me, personally鈥 he continued. 鈥淏ut the task at hand isn鈥檛 about me and it鈥檚 not about the other members of our Board. It's about the students from diverse backgrounds who we serve, including those who may have found access to higher education difficult. It鈥檚 about changing their lives and the trajectory of the generations of family members who will come after them. What makes this university unique is that we are a diverse community of women and men of different races, religions, geographic origins, socio-economic backgrounds, personal characteristics, and interests. Together, along with tens of thousands of proud alumni, we are truly One Limestone.鈥
Richardson鈥檚 election as Limestone鈥檚 Board Chair is especially momentous considering the extremely low number of minorities selected across the country to serve as members of the Board of Trustees for higher education institutions. A national study conducted in 2020 found that only 20 percent of Board members at private colleges or universities were minorities. That same study found that 35 percent of the trustees were minorities at public colleges and universities. While such data was not included in that study, it would be presumed that the percentage of minorities serving as Board of Trustee Chairs, or even officers, is even lower across the nation.
Richardson is a member of the Board of Directors for the Crossnore School and Children鈥檚 Homes, and he serves on Carolina Day School鈥檚 Buildings and Grounds Sub-Committee.
A native of Asheville, Richardson is a graduate from Montreat College, where he earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in business administration. He is also a graduate from Duke University鈥檚 Fuqua School of Business, where he earned a master鈥檚 degree in business administration. Richardson is Fellow of The American College of Healthcare Executives.
鈥淲e are delighted to have Mr. Richardson as the incoming Chair of our Board of Trustees,鈥 said Limestone鈥檚 Interim President Dr. Monica Baloga. 鈥淗e has brought a wealth of insight, wisdom, and guidance to our Board, and I now look forward to working with him in his new role as our Chair. It is also an exciting and historic moment to have Mr. Richardson serving as the first African American Chair of the Board of Trustees at Limestone.鈥
Richardson鈥檚 progressive career encompasses Healthcare Information Technology, Strategic Planning, and Clinical Operations (Cardiology and Psychiatry), beginning at Mission Health System and then at Honeywell International as the Director of the North American Healthcare Vertical Market. Prior to being recruited to Honeywell, Richardson was the Vice President of Global Healthcare Solutions for Lanco Global Systems Inc., where he worked in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe focusing on healthcare clients鈥 IT strategic initiatives.
鈥淐ongratulations to Randall and the other newly elected officers,鈥 Riggins said. 鈥淟imestone鈥檚 Board of Trustees leadership is certainly in very good hands. I am excited to work closely with each of them, and all the members, over the next two years as I dedicate my time primarily to assist with Limestone鈥檚 fundraising efforts.鈥

The Board of Trustees also recently elected five new members to begin five-year terms, beginning on July 1. Information on those new members will be released soon.
